GI Bill and SkillBridge for trade careers: which applies when

Where the GI Bill and SkillBridge fit once you have picked a trade: which benefit applies at which stage of your transition, and what to check first. For the detailed payment rules, follow the links to our sister site.

Looking for the housing allowance rates and the six-month step-down schedule? They are covered in full on our sister site: GI Bill housing allowance for trade school and apprenticeships. To find VA-approved programs, see the Veteran Trade Schools apprenticeships page.

Start from where you are

  • Still serving, inside your last 180 days: the GI Bill on-the-job training benefit is not open to active-duty members[1]. Your route is SkillBridge, which lets you train with a civilian employer while the military keeps paying you[2].
  • Separated veteran, or a reservist: you may be able to use the GI Bill in a VA-approved apprenticeship or on-the-job training program, earning your employer's wage plus a monthly VA payment[1]. A school program is the other option.

How the GI Bill fits the trades

Most of the trades we cover are learned on the job. Electricians and plumbers usually train through 4- to 5-year apprenticeships[3][4], so for them the GI Bill works mostly as a top-up to an apprentice wage rather than as tuition. VA names plumbing and electrical trades as examples of on-the-job training it covers[1]. HVAC and welding more often start with a school program[5][6], where the GI Bill pays for school instead.

The on-the-job payment is largest at the start and shrinks as you progress, so it does the most work in the lean first years of an apprenticeship[7]. The full schedule is on the Veteran Trade Schools housing allowance guide.

Check these before you sign

  1. The employer's program is approved by VA. Confirm it in the GI Bill Comparison Tool[8].
  2. Whether it is also registered with the Department of Labor. Registration and VA approval are separate. Apprenticeship.gov lists registered programs[9].
  3. How and when the employer reports your hours to VA, because payments depend on it[1].
  4. Whether the sponsor gives credit for military experience. That depends on your military job and how well you document it.

SkillBridge in your last 180 days

SkillBridge offers industry training, apprenticeships and internships during your last 180 days of service[2]. Your service keeps paying your salary and benefits. Your commander has to approve it, and it is not open to veterans who have already separated[10]. For a trade, the best placement leads straight into that employer's apprenticeship. Ask whether the follow-on program is VA-approved, so the GI Bill can take over after you separate.

By trade

Each career guide covers the training route and pay: electrician, plumber and pipefitter, HVAC technician, welder and lineworker. For truck driving, see Verified CDL Schools.
